Janie tells Alison that she is pregnant but worries about telling Frank. However, Frank hears about it from Joe when Alison lets slip.

Ruth returns to the village without Tom or her children, and snaps at Edward when he asks after Tom.

Janie tells Ruth that she is pregnant, whilst Ruth tells Janie she has divorced Tom. Janie tells Frank that she is pregnant and he takes the news well.

Jan 14, 1974

Sam tries to find his missing bell but to no avail. Edward is horrified to find Ruth unconscious after taking an overdose.

Jan 15, 1974

Ruth discharges herself from hospital. Annie is shocked when Joe brings Ruth and Janie to the Farm.

Jan 21, 1974

Ruth reveals why she and Tom split - he had an affair. After much consideration from the help of Alison, Matt decides to have the twins christened.

Jan 22, 1974

Sam and Sally are christened with Alison and Janie as godparents. Frank has accepted the job in Essex and moves over with Janie and Ruth.

Amos receives an invite to the ball from Ethel, whilst customers become unhappy with the prices in the shop.

Henry is upset after seeing Alison and Matt together. Christine and Joe share a kiss and agree to meet up again.

Feb 4, 1974

Henry is relieved when Alison admits she isn't ready for marriage following Peter's death, and the pair later find Joe and Christine kissing. Sam finds a man has erected a tent on one of the farm's fields.

Henry is determined to get rid of Dryden, but is surprised when he offers to help muck out the cowshed. Matt and Alison spend more time together.

The new tenants of Crossthwaite's Cottage, Franklin and Diana Prescott arrive. Joe is shocked to find Dryden has left all of a sudden.

Feb 12, 1974

Joe is suspicious about Dryden, and is unconvinced when Dryden says he wants to reward their kindness. Christine is shocked to see Franklin and hides from him.

Feb 18, 1974

Henry and Dryden help Diana renovate Crossthwaite's Cottage, whilst Amos is shocked by the amount the tickets to the ball Ethel invited him to cost.

Feb 19, 1974

Annie takes a liking to Christine when she admits her parents weren't happy together. Franklin informs Robert that Christine is in the village, and Annie leaves him with some good advice.

Feb 25, 1974

Dryden gets dirty helping Diana with the cottage renovations and asks to borrow one of Franklin's shirts - which raises a few eyebrows in the village. Dryden begins looking at doing renovation work on the farm, and Annie is pleased when Christine wants to stay with them.

Annie sorts out the bedding crisis at Emmerdale Farm, whilst Amos confides in Henry that he is worried about taking Ethel to the ball as he can't dance.

Mar 4, 1974

Matt is annoyed when the land rover breaks down again and the mechanics call to inform him that it won't be ready for days. Alison receives a letter from Janie that she won't be returning as she's happy with Frank in London.

Mar 5, 1974

Christine tells Robert that she won't be coming home as she's decided to stay at Emmerdale Farm longer. Alison tells Henry that she doesn't want to marry, but this doesn't stop him from pondering what life together would be like.

Mar 11, 1974

Ethel pushes an uncomfortable Amos to take her to a four star hotel for dinner before the ball. Christine invites Joe to her father's farm, but the pair are forced to spend the night there when their car breaks down.

Mar 12, 1974

Henry and Amos officially go into partnership as landlords of The Woolpack. Annie subtly tells Christine that she knows that she and Joe are in love.

Mar 18, 1974

Alison begins to fall for Dryden when he takes her to a cafe near Skipton. Ethel makes Amos even more uncomfortable taking her out when Ethel informs Amos that her sister Grace, and Grace's husband Ernest will be joining them for dinner before the ball.

Mar 19, 1974

Dryden tells Alison that he has been squatting in Smithy Cottage. Henry hires a surveyor behind Annie's back.

Mar 25, 1974

P.C. Hallam finds that Smithy Cottage has been broken into. Henry leaves for New Zealand when he discovers Marian has gotten engaged.

Mar 26, 1974

P.C. Hallam questions Dryden but finds he hasn't committed any criminal offenders. Amos gets blind drunk after a shambles of a date with Ethel.

Apr 1, 1974

Just as Henry leaves for New Zealand, Marian sends in a telegram informing the Sugden family that she has broken off her engagement. Amos is nonplussed when Ethel forgives him and apologises for last night.

Ethel surprises Amos when she helps him with his money worries. Alison is confused when Matt begins to avoid her when she's with Dryden, and soon catches on to why.

Sam and Annie are unimpressed when Beattie tells Sam and Annie that the twins are sick, and Annie reminds her they won't stay with them forever. Matt feels down in the dumps after being friend zoned by Alison.

Apr 9, 1974

The twins are well again so Ben and Beattie bring them to Emmerdale Farm for their party - but it ends up going wrong! Annie and Beattie have both put Sally on the cakes, and bought them the same present!

Amos is unhappy when Henry receives a letter from Ethel, asking to meet Percy. The Sugden family nearly forget about Annie's birthday, whilst Annie assures Matt that he is still apart of the family even if he remarries.

Joe talks to Dryden about engagement but he avoids his questions. However, Joe arrives with Christine back at Emmerdale Farm, announcing their engagement. Matt invites Alison for dinner and tries to impress her.

Joe is unnerved when Christine refuses to tell her father that they are engaged, and that she won't let him buy her a ring. Meanwhile, Matt gets uncomfortable and leaves part way through his drink with Henry.

Annie is suspicious when Matt refuses to go to the shop. Alison is confused when she and Dryden wave at Matt but he ignores them.

Apr 30, 1974

Franklin returns and Diana finds herself distant from him when he leaves mid-way through their walk. Annie decides an interference is necessary and attempts to reconcile Matt and Alison.

May 6, 1974

Sam decides to play a trick on Henry and Lewis, which results in Henry informing the Hotten Courier that cuckoo birds are in the woods. Annie is unimpressed when Joe and Christine announce their intentions to not have a church wedding - in front of Liz.

May 7, 1974

Sam tells Christine that he is behind the cuckoo bird and leads Henry, Joe, Matt, Annie and Edward to find out he had tricked them - Annie is not impressed. Meanwhile, Joe and Christine consider getting their own place, and moving into Hawthorn Cottage.

May 13, 1974

Edward is pushed to the limit preparing the Sunday school concert. Meanwhile, Henry is cold towards Franklin when he complains about Diana.

May 14, 1974

Today is not Alison's day as Henry pesters her about Matt, and Matt brings up her time in prison.

May 20, 1974

Wally and Edward almost come to blows. Meanwhile, Christine becomes frosty with Joe when he makes a joke about Dryden possibly having an affair with Diana.

May 21, 1974

Diana and Franklin continuously row intensely about his drinking. Meanwhile, Joe and Christine put things right and Christine decides to tell her father about their engagement.

Edward receives a call notifying him that Letty has been attacked by Mick. Joe reveals his suspicions that Dryden and Diana are having an affair. Dryden worries for a drunken Franklin and informs him that his father died of alcohol poisoning.

Robert doesn't like the idea of Christine marrying Joe, believing she is belittling herself. Ethel admits to Henry that she'd rather marry Amos than Dan.

Diana explodes with rage upon discovering Franklin gave up drinking because of Dryden, not her. Meanwhile, Amos is worried Ethel will propose to him, and tries to put her off.

Jun 10, 1974

Diana's worries cause another row between her and Franklin about his alcoholism. Matt breaks down upon realising it's nearly a year after Peggy's death.

Jun 11, 1974

Amos confesses to Ethel that he doesn't want to marry her, so she hits back saying that she thought he needed a friend as he was lonely. Edward still continues to be cold towards Wally, hitting out at him in all but name.

Jun 17, 1974

Joe and Christine go drinking in Bradford, and come back with interesting gossip about Ethel. Sam kicks up a fuss about the party at the Vicarage.

Jun 18, 1974

Ethel informs Amos that she has gotten engaged to Mr. Snape and asks for him to never talk to her again. Wally's feud with Edward gets him thrown out of The Woolpack. Meanwhile, Sam snaps out of his petty behaviour when an upset Liz gives him a call.

Dorrie tries to get Edward to see Wally, but Liz doesn't think it's a good idea. The Sugden family's discussion about Letty getting kicked out of the mother's union continues to push Joe's decision to not have a church wedding further.

Wally and Dorrie gatecrash Edward's party and try to poison the guests mind against Letty, but they get a grilling from Annie.

Jul 1, 1974

Edward is annoyed that Dorrie has had the audacity to tell Letty that she is banned from the mother's union, despite everyone else disagreeing with Dorrie.

Jul 2, 1974

Franklin is enraged to discover Dryden had stayed at Crossthwaite's Cottage whilst he was away, worried about what people would think. Diana hits back, reminding him he didn't care when he was drinking himself silly. Later, he is cool towards Dryden and disallows him to explain himself.

Jul 8, 1974

Franklin feels out of place in the village and asks Diana if she's settled in yet. She tells him he may settle if he stays, but Franklin wants to move to London. Meanwhile, Dryden helps Letty and gives her some good

After having second thoughts, Diana admits she feels like Beckindale isn't home and she and Franklin make plans to move elsewhere. Meanwhile, Letty is shocked to discover Mick has gone and taken her kids.

Dorrie is enraged that everyone gets to vote about whether or not Letty gets to remain on the mother's union, including Letty.

Jul 16, 1974

Diana shares one final meal with Dryden before leaving for Bradford. Meanwhile, Dryden receives a complaint from George about subletting the Forge.

Jul 22, 1974

Liz tries to get Edward to end his feud with Wally, to no avail. Meanwhile, Joe worries when he rings Robert but doesn't get a call back.

Edward realises he has made a mistake upon discovering Letty has visited Father Dougan. Meanwhile, Joe and Christine set a wedding date, whilst Dryden goes sour when Celia finds him in The Woolpack.

Dryden continues to hide in the village as Celia and Paul search for him. Later, he accidentally upsets Alison whilst talking about marriage.

Jul 30, 1974

Annie and Henry are shocked when Paul reveals Dryden up and left his fiancee Celia six months ago and they've been on the hunt for him since. Meanwhile, Robert visits Joe and warns him off marrying Christine.

Aug 5, 1974

Everyone is shocked upon discovering Dryden has absconded. Meanwhile, Christine's plans for her wedding don't match Joe's.

Aug 6, 1974

Amos discovers Ethel and Mr. Snape are due to marry soon, while Joe asks Matt to be his best man. Also, Alison announces her intention to leave Beckindale to Henry.

Christine is unhappy when Joe tries to avoid talking about the honeymoon, and Joe is annoyed when Sam announces his suspicions about where Christine gets her money. Meanwhile, Matt tells Alison that Louise told him that she had been admitted to a mental hospital but assures her that it doesn't make a difference to him.

Work on The Woolpack chimney goes underway, whilst Annie hints to Christine that marriage isn't to be taken lightly. Meanwhile, Alison prepares to tell Matt that she has been in prison.

Disaster strikes at The Woolpack when the chimney collapses and the place is covered in dust. Matt tells Alison that her criminal record doesn't change his feelings, but she says she can't marry him.

Henry offers Norah Alison's job at the shop. Meanwhile, Joe and Christine consider going to London for their honeymoon.

Christine is angry when Matt changes his mind about them moving into Hawthorn Cottage. Meanwhile, Norah begins making changes at the shop.

The village fête gets underway and Sam strives to win the vegetable contest, but loses to Tom Raistrick. Meanwhile, Henry informs George that he is the full owner of the shop and George tells him that's he's accepted within the village now.

Edward is fuming at Wally upon discovering Wally has attempted to dissuade Fred into increasing the church budget. Meanwhile, Henry feels Norah is getting too big for her boots when she continues to make dramatic changes at the shop.

Liz is unhappy when Edward is forced to cancel their trip to Norfolk as Edward is too busy. Also, Christine feels out of place at the Sugdens dinner.

Christine and Joe have a massive row, and Christine walks out on him. She later returns and informs him that their marriage isn't going to work. Meanwhile, Henry offers Liz a job at the shop.

Joe tears through the village and nearly runs Henry over in his landrover. However, Joe has no recollection of the incident. Meanwhile, Robert tries to put things right with Joe and Christine.

Henry is annoyed when Norah begins to take over his responsibilities. Meanwhile, Sam is concerned about Joe after hearing Joe say he doesn't care if Christine didn't return.

Sam is forced to tell Robert that Christine has gone missing. Meanwhile, Amos returns from holiday and is shocked to find the changes in The Woolpack.

Norah catches a thief, and is surprised to find the familiar face of Kathy Davis in her shop - but with no husband in sight.

Joe's suspicions are confirmed when he tracks down Christine's ex-boyfriend and finds them together. Meanwhile, Amos is unnerved with Norah's decision to sell soft drinks at the shop.

Norah spreads the word that a new headmaster will be joining the village. Meanwhile, Annie tries to help Joe and Norah tries to get the shop a liquor license.

Sam berates Joe for the village gossip, saying that he brings shame on the family. In turn, Annie berates Sam for making it public knowledge. Meanwhile, Henry is annoyed that Norah is continuing to make decisions without informing him, and the new headmaster arrives in the village.

Joe is upset when Christine breaks off their marriage and gives him back the ring. Meanwhile, Amos is annoyed when people keep using The Woolpack phone as the phone box is out of order.

James and Kathy strike up a friendship, while Annie tries to get Joe to tell Robert about Christine's whereabouts. Also, Amos is unhappy with the mural in The Woolpack.

Joe and Kathy bond over their unhappy marriages and Henry and Annie catch them kissing. Meanwhile, Robert tries to track down Christine.

Kathy tells Jim that her marriage to Kenny is over. Meanwhile, Henry sorts out a squabble between Sam, Norah and Amos.
